What better way to jingle our way into the New Year than by announcing our last Glistener of the month of 2014, Ms. Katherine Dickerson!
This blue-eyed bombshell proves over and over again she is a driven, go-gettter. We’ve both known Katherine since life in La Quinta back in high school, where she was always a busy-bee with a smile on her face and a golden tan running around to ASB, Tennis or Swim, or volunteering with our NCL group. It was no surprise that she was able to graduate from UCLA in 3 years while managing the Girls Tennis Team and working part time. She is truly the queen of multi-tasking, school spirit, and really living life to the fullest, each and everyday. She should be an inspiration to all of us, as her contagious passion continues to show how a healthy lifestyle can drive happiness.
How do you make health a priority?
I live the 90-10 life, where 90% of the time I eat clean, and 10% of the time I splurge. I made health a priority when I realized how good I felt when I ate clean, exercised and just made more conscientious decisions about that food I ate. Healthy living stays a priority because I love feeling good, and being able to push myself to new limits. Its an amazing thing when you have boundless energy from eating clean, natural foods – there is so much more you can do!
Do you have a motto?
Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose! – Friday Night Lights… My motto changes depending on my goals for the month. But I always revert back to the oldie but goodie “Small changes can have big effects” slogan, which is really true. If you make small adjustments to your lifestyle, whether it is diet or exercise, it does have a ripple effect, allowing other parts of your life to crave health as well, leading to bigger changes for overall health and happiness. I believe happiness is supremely important. If you are miserable juicing, then don’t juice! Find some other way to crowd healthier foods into your life, which will cause the unhealthy foods to eventually crowd out.
What is your go to song when working out?
I love listening to two types of music, EDM- to get a great beat that allows me to do reps or run in rhythm so I get into the zone, and Country Fitness radio on Pandora to allow me to get lost in the song, and not focus on the burning when I am working out. One of my favorite country anthems is “Something Bad” by Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood. AH, I hear that song and I just get a boost of energy and it gets me pumped up!
Do you have a favorite power-up snack?
I love bananas and apples. I often grab a banana before I head to the gym. The complex carbs give me the energy I need throughout my workout. I also always have a KIND bar in my gym bag if I need some more sustenance.
What food do you splurge on?
There is one thing I will never give up and that is peanut butter! I love me some peanut butter! I have it in moderation, and usually combine it with apples or bananas to take care of any sweet craving I have.
What makes you glisten?
Two things really, for myself – working out. I get such a high from it, and it is so therapeutic to just put the day behind me, and just work on me. The gym time is my “me time”, and I always make time for it, even if it’s just a quick run, or a nice long 3 hour workout. Another thing that makes me glisten is seeing other people happy and reaching their goals. It is so exciting to see people who are bettering themselves find fulfillment in who they are and conquer obstacles to achieve goals!
I hope to have more of my health coaching clients in 2015, and do more nutrition workshops and seminars to help folks start the year off on the right foot. I am beginning to put together a few corporate wellness program pitches, which I may implement at the UCLA Alumni Network I am the Executive Director of. I am also taking my health coaching practice online, and doing consulting for folks who aren’t necessarily in my local. Its exciting, fun and overwhelming all at the same time.
